HISTORY
The Victorian South Suffolk Society came into being shortly after 1972; the Australian South Suffolk Sheep Society had just joined the Australian Society of Breeders of British Sheep Limited.
Three breeders, Mr Colin Christie, Mr Ted & Mrs June Gain met at the Vine Hotel in Wangaratta where the Victorian South Suffolk Society was officially formed.
Previous to this, on September 23rd, 1958, the late Mr SW Porter of Orford,Vic; Mr GC Mackie, Culcairn, NSW; Mr RG Ireland, Yankalilla and Mr AF Clarke, Yankailla, SA, had formed ' The Australian South Suffolk Sheep Society'.
This society had printed a flock book for the breed for the 14 years prior to joining the ASBBS (now known as ASSBA) in 1972.

South Suffolk sheep were officially founded as a set breed in New Zealand in 1929, by Mr George Gould and were first imported into Australia in 1946.
